A God Among Pixels

Jude Buffum is an artist that uses an outdated graphic style to create a unique product. His site does not fail to show that as it has a squared theme across the whole site. Upon opening the site you are welcomed to a short flash, which is pretty neat. The typeface is a very clear one and itself is a very square based typeface which adds the the sites effect. The hierarchy is also very simple, usually only being two or three ranks.  The simplicity of the site also is a reference to how simple pixel are. The navigation is also a simple in the top right. The color choice of the type and bars are very neutral or flat, which also the icons for his works pop more.  This allows the viewer to focus in on the work rather than the sight.

His works are separated into categories (when needed), and keep the square pixel feel.  When you click into a piece of work it brings you to a detail page.  In this detail page the bar for the category moves to the bottom of the page and maintains its order. The other images also dim out, while in this mode of page.

This site is basically a portfolio of Jude's work and how you can contact him from work.  This gold of this this is, as said before, the overall cohesion.  Everything in the square format, and simple all aspects of pixel based works. He has links to his blog and his store incase you want to buy some of his work or just follow his graphic journey.

The Man, The Legend, The Website!

Ralph Steadman is know for his bold, symbolic, and honestly insane style.  This insane style extends to even his website.  There are two navigation bars on the first page, one on the right and other on the bottom of the page.  The font may be a little messy, but you can read the words fine.  In terms of a hierarchy, there seems to not be any.  When you continue further into the site the navigation completely changes.  It transitions the the left and top, but this time it is in a simpler type.  The site always on the top of the page lets you know which section and sub-section you are on.

The site has a lot in it, which it appears to not have at first sight.  Each section has a whole bar of sub-sections.  The type within the section is very simple, bold for titles and regular for the body.  The entry titles could have a bit of a bigger font to make them pop out more though.  The main sections each have the same layout, but each is a different color.  The home page though is unique from these other pages.  The site is covered in pictures of his work, and this shows off a lot of his unique style of art.  The amount of pictures he has spread all over the site seems pretty fine, I mean he is a Graphic Designer after all!  There aren't any real icons or symbols in the site.

I found it interesting that the three page colors were red, green, blue (RGB).  It gave me a good giggle at first, but fits to the fact of him being a Graphic Artist.  Which ever color the page was given was the only one used mostly.  All of them have the tan background, with the chosen color in the main part of page.

The site has no defined single purpose, but many.  It lets you keep up to date with Steadmen's new works and projects, and also purchase merchandise of his.  The one thing this site may want to add is a search bar to make browsing easier.  I like the "What's New?" section a lot, as it is a good way to find something your looking for, or just go to find something cool.  The one thing I really dislike is that some pages are extremely long and I find myself getting lost some times.

Overall I love the site and the access to see Steadmen's amazing art and the ability to see some of his insight.  This site is defiantly a home run for fanboys and girls of Steadmen.  But for those who stumble upon him, or find this site from word of mouth, be prepared.  Steadmen is not afraid to say or illustrate his mind.  His site contains most of his material and some I would put a mature warning on.  That is another thing possibly that should be included is a mature warning.
